The Birth of The Vibe Assasins

When Terrell took his act on the road in 1995, who would have thought the experience of playing with his band live would shape the music that was to come? Terrell's previous album, Angry Southern Gentleman, was a solo effort through and through. I figured the next record would have been a logical sequel to the masterpiece. In a way it was...

Charlie and his band, The Vibe Assasins (Jim Doyle, J Swanson and Rich Meijer), created something while out on the road playing music together. A "sound" if you will. Most of these songs were written on an electric guitar, a first for Terrell, and most were finished musically before any lyrics were written, also a first for Terrell. What you get is a live sounding rock album and a great one at that.

The lyrics are all about sex, religion, insanity and life. Just what I have come to expect from the incomprable Charlie Terrell.

New Orleans to Vegas...

As a poet myself, there are many writers I admire and envy and Charlie Terrell is definitely in this category. "Beautiful Side of Madness" is a song I wish I'd written. Charlie writes with the grit of Tom Waits, the intuitiveness of Bukowski, the tenderness of a woman and the passion of a madman. With Joan Osborne's soulful voice rounding out the song, it makes for a complete masterpiece. The rest of the album is great too- road music for a trip to Vegas on a rainy night. Charlie's music is the mostly highly UNDERrated I have ever heard.
